cmdop vs Daytona
Daytona and cmdop both manage container runtimes with stateful processes and devcontainer-based environments. The divergence: Daytona is a workspace coordinator for human development — it provisions and manages dev environments as the unit of work. cmdop’s unit is the persistent execution state itself, treated as an active runtime that multiple heterogeneous actors share — observing it concurrently and steering it in turn — rather than a workspace handed to a developer.

Key distinction
Daytona is a CDE coordinator: it standardizes how dev workspaces are defined, provisioned and managed, with the workspace as the deliverable to a human developer. The execution inside is a property of that workspace. cmdop names the execution state itself as the primitive — a live, shared runtime that CLI, GUI, API and AI actors attach to as operators — observing it concurrently and steering it in turn under attributed authority — independent of any single client’s presence. Daytona answers “manage developer workspaces at scale”; cmdop answers “hold an active, shared execution state that heterogeneous actors operate on concurrently.”
Two cuts sharpen this. First, durable environment vs durable live execution: Daytona persists the workspace across stops, but the running process state inside it is not the thing it holds — restart hands you a fresh runtime in a preserved environment. cmdop holds the live execution itself. Second, ownerless and multi-operator: a Daytona workspace is handed to a developer as its owner; cmdop’s execution state has no privileged occupant, and many dissimilar operators (human or AI) attach to one live session under attributed, transferable authority. Daytona answers “manage developer workspaces at scale”; cmdop answers “hold one ownerless live execution that heterogeneous operators share.”
Classification note
This comparison is commonly misfiled as a “self-hosted CDE” question; the boundary is whether the system coordinates provisioned human workspaces (Daytona) or maintains a persistent, active, multi-actor execution-state primitive (cmdop).
